And it’s a wrap!

And it’s a wrap . . . Monday 5 October saw the final event bring the 2020protour season to a close – and what a dramatic finish!

Results over the weeks had ensured there would be great excitement; could Nicholas Poppleton sink the 6 birdies he needed for the McClarrons’ Race to 100 birdies and £20k? Could John Parry win the final to add to his three wins in the last eleven events to grab the Swimnation £10k bonus? Who would win the OOM – Poppleton or McCarthy – neck and neck going into the final?

Well, after determined and strong performances, Pops missed out by one birdie; Parry came tied second; and McCarthy’s final event proved enough to clinch the OOM so very narrowly from Pops.

Well played to them all and, indeed, to George Bloor the winner of the final with an excellent 65 (-6). What massive talent we have seen on the Tour throughout the year.

It’s hard to believe the season has come to an end, after a delayed start and then a temporary halt, but end it has and many thanks are due to so many people for making it happen!

So here’s a massive shout out to all our supporters and partners who made the inaugural year possible:

And finally – the players – professional and amateur, male and female – thank you for making our dream of an equitable Tour into a reality. Without your willingness to enter the events and keep returning, 2020protour would not have existed.

We’ve learned so much on the journey so far, and look forward to next year’s Tour and to welcoming players back to compete once again.

Thank you all!

The year so far!

Back in November 2019 Chris Hanson and Adam Walker launched the 2020protour, the culmination of several years of discussion around the possibilities of setting up a mini Tour in the north of England.

Their idea of adopting an equitable policy which would allow men and women professional golfers to compete fairly for the same OOM and prize money was ready to go in February 2020. A schedule comprising 22 events, sponsored by an impressive host of business partners, was announced and entries started to come in!

However, atrocious weather conditions meant a delayed start to the season. After some rescheduling, the Tour kicked off on Monday 16 March, when clear blue skies and bright sunshine greeted the players at Crosland Heath Golf Club, Huddersfield.

Sponsored by The Body Doctor, The Eye Doctor Classic, produced some excellent golf. Nicholas Poppleton, from Wath Golf Club, carded a high-quality 64 (-7), which included 8 birdies and he took away a first prize of £1,200.

A couple of days after the inaugural event came the ThinOptics Masters, played at Fixby Hall, the home of The Huddersfield Golf Club. Again, the day produced some great scoring; home favourite Nick Marsh shot 64 (-6) in the feature group with European Tour player Marcus Armitage (-5), and Richard Mansell (-5).

However, the schedule was once again halted, this time by coronavirus and for a while the future of the Tour hung in the balance. Thankfully, golf was allowed to resume (whilst abiding by national and Golf England rules and guidelines) and the Tour has been delighted to welcome past and present European Tour and Ryder Cup stars, such as Jamie Donaldson, Paul Broadhurst, Zander Lombard, Iain Pyman, and Marcus Armitage, as well as numerous Senior Tour and Challenge Tour winners, along with Ladies European Tour winners Meg McClaren, Amy Boulden and Carly Booth.

The Tour has also been open to amateur players off 4 handicap or lower and a significant number of male and female amateurs have been inspired to challenge themselves in the professional environment, enjoying the opportunity to not just play with some of the players named above but against them – and at times beat them!! There can’t have been many times when a 12-year-old girl could play against a current European Tour player!

A massive incentive to members of the Tour has been the McClarrons Sport Race to 100 Birdies. Any player to make 100 birdies by the end of the schedule, wins (or shares) a huge and season-changing £20,000!!! After 21 events, Nicholas Poppleton has 94 birdies – with just the final at Huddersfield Golf Club (5 October) to play, Nicholas therefore requires 6 more birdies to clinch the prize! Can he do it?!

A second amazing incentive was provided by Tour partner Swimnation in the second half of the schedule; if any player were to win (or tie to win) four events out of the last 11, including the outright win at the final at Huddersfield, then he or she would take home £10,000. It’s looking very promising for John Parry who has had three wins – Willow Valley, Low Laithes and Bradley Hall.  Can he clinch it at Huddersfield?!

Many of the events have been live streamed by ContentLiveGolf. The coverage that Ian Waterhouse and his team have produced has gone from strength to strength, gaining an ever-increasing number of views as the season has progressed, with a stunning total close to 1 million in the lead up to the Tour final. They will be filming all the action at Huddersfield Golf Club on 5 October and will be streaming to the 2020protour Facebook page.

One of the many highlights of the season has been Ellie Givens taking the win at Rockcliffe Hall, Darlington. Ellie shot -4 around her home course, sharing the spoils with her club compatriot Andrew Wilson. It does appear that this is the first time a woman has taken the title in a UK professional tour event where women were competing with men. Well done to Ellie on becoming a record breaker (we think)!

RRG Kia Bury title sponsored the fabulous Marriott Worsley Park event on 27 July. A tough day for weather nevertheless saw some great golf, with Marco Penge and Wilco Nienaber sharing the win, Wilco going on to secure some top ten finishes on the European Tour.

The final event at Huddersfield Golf Club – the DD Porter Construction Tour Final – will bring a wonderful season to an exciting close. The result of the McClarrons race to 100 birdies and the Swimnation challenge will be decided; the professional and amateur OOMs will be finalised – and the winners will take home prizes from Bunker Mentality, The Golf Travel People, KBS Golf, SwingSpeedGolf, CaddyGolfClub, WowHydrate and Underpin Sports.

A fine 64 (-7) from Nick McCarthy in the penultimate event at Bradford GC, the GolfQuizz Masters, has taken him to the top of the OOM, with Nicholas Poppleton hard on his heels – it’s all up for grabs! Amateur George Mason has a commanding lead on the Amateur OOM, thanks to his impressively consistent performance. Brogan Townend from Pleasington Golf Club is the leading female professional, in19th place, with Thalia Martin the leading female amateur on 11th

A feature of the finals’ day will be a Shoot Out; after completion of the professionals’ event, the leading 16 players will go into a head-to-head for a bonus £500 prize. If the coverage of the Low Laithes Shoot Out is anything to go by, then it will certainly provide some exciting entertainment!

Is she…?

Rocket Yard Sports media story – Rockliffe Hall 20/07/20

Is it? We are checking every available resource we have and it does appear that this is the first time a woman has taken the title in a professional tour event where women are competing with the men. Well done to Ellie on becoming a record breaker (we think)!

This was to be a fantastic event for Rocket Yard Sports as we recently announced that we are partnering with the 2020protour to support their sales & marketing efforts as the tour continues to flourish in it’s maiden season despite the disruption caused by Covid-19. The tour is founded by long time Rocket Yard client, Chris Hanson and his business partner Adam Walker. The concept was born out of the idea that there were little to no gender inclusive tours where women are able to compete against the men in a fair and neutral way. We naturally love the concept and now, felt like the right time to get involved.

Part of the arrangement between Rocket Yard and 2020protour, was for us to be the title sponsor of our own event, aka, ‘The Rocket Yard Classic’ hosted at Rockliffe Hall in Darlington.

The weather conditions were breezy and a little chilly which made for difficult scoring for most of the morning starters. By the time the later tee times got underway, scoring soon improved and LET Tour Player, Ellie Givens made a run at the top of the leaderboard with a solid score of 68, a 4 under par round that stood for some time. This is where our next stroke of good fortune came in… there are no playoffs, so 1st place is a shared prize and with a late chip in, Andrew Wilson who is also a Rocket Yard client ended up on 4 under par as well to share the spoils with Ellie.

Off the back of our partnership of the 2020protour we have already gained over 100 new followers across our social platforms, several enquiries for athlete representation, and more than 10 enquiries about our sports marketing services from brands. At the end of the day… sponsorship is a marketing discipline and it’s worked well in our favour.

CMD Classic – Worksop GC

Prior to lockdown, the 2020protour was delighted to announce that Contract Management Direct (CMD) were to become a tour partner and also title sponsor of the 4th event at Fulford Golf Club.

Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, that event was soon cancelled; however, we are extremely excited to announce that CMD will now title sponsor the 2020protour event at Worksop Golf Club on Wednesday 22nd July!

“Worksop is a fantastic venue to host any Tour event, and to have CMD title sponsor the event will help to create even more of a tour feel. Paul has been a great supporter of the 2020protour from day 1 and we can’t thank him enough for his support along the way!”

Speaking with Paul Hemlin from CMD, it was clear to see his passion for golf and for supporting male and female golfers who show a real ambition to succeed at the highest level.

CMD have also offered a fantastic #memberbenefit which is often overlooked in the professional world of sport. CMD will offer any member of the 2020protour a free 1-hour consultation to have any sponsorship contract examined to make sure the player is protected when signing a deal.

About Contract Management Direct

Contract Management Direct (CMD) are experts in business-related contracts. Our experience in drafting, agreeing and managing contracts ranges from global IT outsourcing, telecoms, naval shipbuilding, oil, rail and construction projects through to contracts for professional golfers, golf clubs and local shops. Based in York, over the last 13 years CMD has worked in over 20 countries for clients ranging from global corporations such as Hewlett Packard, Unilever, BAE Systems, Telefonica, and the UK Cabinet Office, through to small, local owner-operator businesses.

We have considerable experience in helping smaller companies contract with larger customers or suppliers, ensuring a fair deal is agreed.

Contracts exist to record an agreement and need ongoing management after they are signed. Over 95% of their content is not ‘law’, it is critical deal elements such as roles and responsibilities – the who, where, when and how much – which are the areas that cause the most disputes. Contracts should encourage collaboration and mutual gain, not just say what happens if things go wrong. Not having robust contracts in place will affect the value of your business in the event of a sale.

Let our experienced commercially minded Contract Managers look after your contracts, so you can look after your business. CMD offers a flexible range of service packages to suit all business needs and budgets.”

Title sponsor The Hopkins Classic

The 2020protour are delighted to welcome Hopkins Butchers, Birkenshaw, as the title sponsors for The Hopkins Classic at Cleckheaton and District Golf Club on Monday 8 June!

Adam Walker, co-founder of 2020protour: “It’s brilliant to have a local business on board for the Cleckheaton event. Hopkins are a great village butchers providing excellent product and service to their community and beyond”.

The Hopkins Classic start sheet is full and a very strong field will contend for the title with current male and female European Tour players along with former Ryder Cup stars.

Not only are Cleckheaton and District Golf Club, and their professional Lee Shepherd, excited to host the tournament but they are working hard to present the course in top tournament condition. On the day, huge support from their members is being provided as they have volunteered to look after bunkers and pins – many thanks to all!

Understandably, social distancing will be observed at all times but fans will be able to follow all the action throughout the day from home, as we are thrilled to announce that ContentLiveGolf will be live streaming via our Facebook page.

Enjoy the golf!

Hopkins Butchers – 732 Bradford Road – Bd112AE – Birkenshaw, Bradford

All you have to do is head over to the Hopkins Butchers Facebook page by clicking here and post which player you think will win the Hopkins Classic along with the following hashtag #HopkinsStandPie

All correct answers will go in a prize draw following the conclusion of the Hopkins Classic – Good Luck

After working closely with Cleckheaton Golf Club and Lee Shepherd their club professional, we are delighted to announce that entries for the event on Monday 8th June are now OPEN!

The club are extreamly excited to host the event and are already working hard to present the course in the best possible tournament conditions!

SOCIAL DISTANCING will be key to the success of the event and ALL events going forward and we will be closely following the government guidelines!

Please as a player respect these!

In the next few weeks, we will keep you updated with the guidelines as they will be changing week to week!

Cleckheaton GC have been fantastic in extending the tee times for this event so we can achieve maximum numbers in what is most likely to be an event played in TWO balls for obvious reasons.

Going forward, we are working with ALL courses on our schedule to finalise each event and will strive to keep the schedule up to date as soon as possible, along with announcements on social media.

For now, PLEASE do not enter any events past Cleckheaton (8th June) until we release an official entry date – this is due to confirming field sizes at each course after COVID-19 restrictions.

We must appreciate that each course will be dealing with COVID-19 in different ways and saying that this may still effect some tournament dates and field sizes.

If events do go ahead with reduced field sizes (30 players) then MEMBERS will get preference, that is only fair.

Again, we are working hard to get all events into the schedule and to avoid any clashes with other Tours/PGA regions.

Currently we are accepting ALL professional entries but only amateur entries from current members of the 2020protour, so please bare this in mind when entering events, this is due to field sizes.

Professional and amateurs can still join the 2020protour and take advantage of the member benefits, the only difference for professionals is that their McClarrons birdie count will only start from when they join the 2020protour.

Thank you for your understanding in these tough times, we hope you are all safe and well, but also appreciate you want to play golf as for many of you it’s your only source of income.

GOOD LUCK throughout the year on ALL tours and stay safe!

See you on the course soon

Adam Walker
